It was a scary good try.
The California Highway Patrol has cited a man for driving in the carpool lane with a Chucky doll. The evil doll from the “Child’s Play” horror movie series was buckled into the front passenger seat of his blue car.
The dolls are popular in the Bay area because of Jon Gruden, who has returned as head coach of the Oakland Raiders. He has often been compared to Chucky because of his scowl, and fans have enthusiastically embraced the comparison.

A California Highway Patrol officer cited the man at about 4 p.m. Thursday on an on-ramp to Highway 4 in Concord where metering lights were on and traffic had backed up, said patrol spokesman Officer Brandon Correia, according to SFGate. He said he asks officers to send him funny photos but had never seen anything like this.
“Nobody has a Chucky doll, period. Let alone has a Chucky doll in their car,” Correia said.
The driver passed 25 to 30 cars, according to Fox 40. Tickets for the violation are up to $500.
Driver must have at least two passengers to drive in the carpool lane, Correia said.
The driver’s name was not released.
Correia tweeted a photo of the doll on the patrol’s Contra Costa Twitter account with the caption: “We know JON GRUDEN is back, and we love it too, but this will definitely not work as your carpool passenger! But hilarious! A for effort,... and here’s your carpool ticket.”
