Merced police arrest man on suspected gun possession, gang enhancement charges

A 20-year-old man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of illegal gun possession and other allegations, according to Merced police.

The department’s Gang Violence Suppression Unit was patrolling the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way about 11:30 p.m. when they found several gang members congregating in the driveway of a residence and drinking alcoholic beverages, according to a department news release.

Officers recognized some of the individuals as underage and on probation.

As the officers approached the group, several of the men ran but were soon detained. One of those people, Diego Ramirez, 20, was searched by Officer Ramon Ruiz, who found a loaded firearm in the suspect’s waistband, according to police.

Ramirez was arrested on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm, gang enhancements and contributing to the delinquency of minors. He remains at the Merced County Jail in lieu of $204,000 bail.
