Planada man walks onto Highway 99, killed by big rig

A 32-year-old Planada man was killed early Friday near Chowchilla when he walked onto the northbound lanes of Highway 99 and was struck by two big rigs, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The Madera County coroner’s office identified the man as Carlos Manuel Saldana.

The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. as big rig driver Patricia Ann Baker, 56, of O’Neals was northbound on Highway 99 near the westbound Highway 152 connector, according to the CHP.

Baker told officers she saw Saldana walk from the shoulder into the right lane. Baker tried to drive to the right, but Saldana walked back toward the shoulder in front of the truck and was hit by the front of the vehicle and fell between the right and left lanes.

Big rig driver Jack Wayne Bourgeois, 49, of Citrus Heights was also traveling northbound when he saw traffic slowing. He began to move into the left lane and then struck Saldana, the CHP said.

Both Baker and Bourgeois stopped at the accident scene and cooperated with officers.
