A 21-year-old Merced man allegedly tried to crash his car into a California Highway Patrol vehicle over the weekend in an apparent suicide attempt, officers told the Merced Sun-Star.
CHP Officer Angel Fuentes was not injured when the Merced man deliberately tried to ram his vehicle around 3 a.m. Sunday on Highway 99 in Merced, Officer Moises Onsurez confirmed.
Fuentes was heading south on Highway 99, approaching the V Street offramp, when the other man’s vehicle came up the ramp, going the wrong way, and veered toward the officer’s car, the CHP said.
“The officer took evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision; he drove into the center divide and activated his emergency lights,” Onsurez told the Sun-Star.

The man pulled in behind the officer in the center divide. The CHP said the man, who appeared intoxicated, told the officer he was trying to commit suicide. Onsurez said it was fortunate nobody was injured and no other people were involved in the incident.
The man was booked into the Merced County Main Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, for allegedly trying to crash into the officer, and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was still in custody Monday, with bail set at more than $32,000, according to booking records.
