A large power outage hit Merced on Wednesday, affecting traffic lights and leaving many residents without power for hours.
The outage was first reported around 12:45 p.m. in the northern half of the city. At the height of the outage, more than 5,000 customers were without power. As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, 269 customers were without power, according to PG&E’s website.
Denny Boyles, Pacific Gas and Electric spokesman, said the outage was attributed to broken underground equipment.
Many residents reported that several businesses throughout the city also were left without power, including stores inside the Merced Mall.
