Merced police arrest felon for alleged gun possession

A 30-year-old alleged gang member was arrested Thursday night after Merced police reported finding him in possession of a loaded firearm.

The arrest of suspect Carlos Baker was reported at 10:40 p.m. in the 2100 block of East Yosemite Parkway, according to a Merced police press release.

The Merced Police Department’s Gang Violence Suppression Unit was patrolling the area when officers heard a vehicle with a loud stereo pass by.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle for the loud music. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers noticed a handgun lying on the vehicle’s floor board, according to the release.

Baker, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was detained. Police determined the weapon was loaded and had been reported stolen. Baker was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm, possession of stolen property and gang enhancements.
