Merced police respond to Chowchilla bomb threat

The Merced Police Department’s bomb unit responded to Chowchilla on Sunday after a device resembling a bomb was discovered.

Officers went to the 500 block of Robertson Boulevard at 10:57 a.m. after receiving a call from Chowchilla police, according to Merced police Sgt. Bobby Chapman.

The object was deemed suspicious because it was wrapped in foam with black and red wires sticking out of it. The object also had a cellphone attached to it, Chapman said.

Officers arrived at the scene and immobilized the object. An investigation determined the device did not have a power source or explosives inside. However, police do believe whoever created the object intended it to look like a bomb.

“It definitely looked like a true device,” Chapman said.
