Merced homicide victim identified

A man shot and killed last week in Merced was identified Monday as 27-year-old Steven Mays Jr., the Merced County Coroner’s Office told the Merced Sun-Star.

Mays was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds around 7:52 p.m. Thursday, lying in the road in the 1100 block of M Street in Merced, the Merced Police Department said.

Officers went to the scene after receiving a call of shots fired. Officers found the victim lying in the middle of the intersection, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a Modesto hospital where he later died, police said.

Police believe the victim was riding a bicycle when he was approached by an unknown person and shot several times. The shooter left the scene in an unknown direction. A suspect description has not been released.

Capt. Tom Trindad on Monday said detectives were still following up on leads in the case and hoping for someone from the public to come forward with information.
