Wood fencing and a backyard shed were damaged in a grass fire that burned about 10 acres behind a residential neighborhood in Elk Grove early Friday afternoon.

The fire sent up thick plumes of smoke.

Tracey Hansen, chief of the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department, said the fire burned 10 acres of dry grass in the field behind homes on Dandelion Drive, near Sheldon Road and Highway 99.

Crews had responded by 12:50 p.m. to the site of flames that had burned up to backyard fences. Hansen said about 600 feet of residential fence was damaged as well as a plastic backyard shed.

Hansen said crews used hand tools, hose lines and backfires to bring the fire under control.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
