Contract awarded for upgrade of flood-prone south Sacramento creek

A $7 million contract has been awarded to for flood-prevention creek improvements in south Sacramento.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded the contract to PRS Newland JV of Sacramento to make the changes along Florin Creek. The work includes new floodwalls, relocating utilities and widening and concrete-lining the creek.

Work, which is scheduled to begin in August, should be done in the fall 2016. The Florin Creek work is the final construction project for South Sacramento County creeks.

“We've successfully completed safety improvements at North Beach Lake levee and Morrison, Elder and Union House creeks, so the Florin Creek construction will complete this important program,” said Corps project manager John Hoge.

The area has been vulnerable to flooding when high flows occur on the creeks in wet winters.
