Will Sacramento see its first rain in months?

Despite a sunny morning, Sacramento has two chances to see some rain Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

A cold front moving through the region had already dropped some rain over the Redding area by Sunday morning, but it was weakening, said NWS Meteorologist Eric Kurth. After it pushes through the Sacramento area, things will clear up for a bit and then there’s the potential for showers and thunderstorms, Kurth said.

“We might see some rain from (the initial front)” he said. “It’s going to be a scattered sort of rain.”

If the rain materializes, it will be the first time it has rained in downtown Sacramento since May. The area near Eureka saw about half an inch of rain accumulate from the cold front Sunday morning. The northern coastal mountains have a quarter to a third of an inch and western Shasta County saw around a tench of an inch, Kurth said.

Temperatures are expected to top out at 69 Sunday, significantly colder than normal for this time of year. Monday is predicted to reach a high of 64.

During recent winter storms, many Sacramentans had the same thought: How can I save some of that rain for later? Holding onto that rain can recharge soil moisture, cut down on outside water use and create lasting savings on irrigation. Which metho
