The first sustained rain of the season was a hit-or-miss proposition as a weather front moved across the Sacramento region on Friday, soaking the foothills and delivering less than a tenth of an inch of rain to downtown Sacramento by noon.

The weather system is expected to drop from 1-to-3 inches of precipitation on Friday in the Sacramento Valley. In the Sacramento area, rainfall could amount to about a half-inch. The last time it rained more than a half-inch was April 27.

The National Weather Service timed the rain to reach the Sacramento area around mid-morning, missing most of the morning commute. However, as of 9 a.m., the rain still had not registered in rain gauges in Sacramento, Elk Grove and Folsom.

However, other spots did have some measurable rain: 0.35 of an inch in Auburn, 0.12 in Loomis, 0.04 in Roseville, 0.04 in Fair Oaks and 0.04 in Rancho Cordova.

As the day wore on, rain totals started to climb. As of noon rain gauges showed increasing amounts: 1.02 in Auburn, 0.36 in Loomis, 0.24 in Roseville, 0.20 in Fair Oaks and 0.16 in Rancho Cordova.

By noon other spots also started to register measurable rainfall: 0.23 in Orangevale, 0.06 in Sacramento and 0.20 at Folsom Lake. Some spots were still dry or barely wet: 0.03 at Sacramento International Airport and 0.00 in Elk Grove.

Saturday could also include some rain, followed by more on Sunday. Winds are predicted to gust over 20 mph both days.
