Winter weather advisory in effect in Tahoe region – chains required on Highway 50

Snow continues to fall in the Sierra Nevada, and the Lake Tahoe region is under a winter weather advisory through Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. Sunday above 7,000 feet, or roughly the elevation of Donner Pass. NWS expects snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches above 7,000 feet with lighter snowfall of 2 to 8 inches down to 6,500 feet.

The snow has already led to chain requirements on Highway 50. As of 1:20 p.m., chains are being required from Twin Bridges to Meyers on all vehicles except those with four-wheel drive and snow tires.

On Interstate 80, eastbound truck drivers are being screened at Applegate for chains in their possession, but no other requirements are in place.
