Hail in the Sierra prompted closure of eastbound Interstate 80 for about an hour Tuesday afternoon and thunderstorms in the area are expected to continue through the evening.
A flash flood watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. for the greater Lake Tahoe area and western Nevada.
Eastbound I-80 was closed between Boreal and Donner Lake for about an hour in the mid-afternoon due to a hailstorm over Donner Summit. Shortly after 2 p.m. the National Weather Service reported torrential rain and hail on I-80 between Truckee and Soda Springs.
Juan Hernandez, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the Truckee area around Donner Lake, as of 6 p.m., had received 1.13 inches of rain for the 24-hour period.

A strong thunderstorm also was reported about 3 p.m. in the Kirkwood area.
Thunderstorm activity was continuing Tuesday evening along the Sierra crest and to the east, and the National Weather Service warned of dangerous lightning.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast for Wednesday in the South Lake Tahoe and Truckee areas, with clearing expected Wednesday night.
