After 8 days of dry weather, rain is expected to dampen Sacramento on Thursday starting around noon.

The National Weather Service predicts that showers today will be accompanied by brisk winds. Gusts could reach 30 mph in Sacramento, which will do a lot to remove remaining leaves from trees.

The NWS timing of the one-day storm goes like this:

Precipitation expected in Redding by late morning, showers in the Sacramento region around lunchtime and snow in the northern Sierra Nevada in the afternoon. The main precipitation band is expected to go east into the foothills by late afternoon.

Watch out for hazardous driving conditions in the Sierra late in the day. In Sacramento, rainfall will not be heavy: from a quarter- to a half-inch of precipitation.

To demonstrate hydroplane conditions and how to recover, CHP Officer Dan Wright takes The Sacramento Bee for a spin on the academy's hazardous-conditions track in West Sacramento. Cut the risk of hydroplaning by reducing speeds.
