A dense fog advisory was issued Tuesday morning, a couple of days before the major weather event of the week occurs.
The fog advisory issued around 2:30 a.m. remains in effect until 10 a.m. in the Sacramento region. Use low beams on vehicles and leave plenty of distance on the roads, the National Weather Service reminds morning commuters.
A fairly strong weather system is predicted to bring heavy snow and significant rain beginning Wednesday night. The brunt of the storm is expected to hit on Thursday.
Snow levels are forecast to lower throughout the day on Thursday and could drop to the 4,000-feet elevation level by mid-to-late afternoon in the Sierra Nevada. Up to a couple feet of snow could fall along mountain passes, making travel on Interstate 80 and Highway 50 difficult.
A wide range is predicted in terms of rainfall for the Sacramento Valley: from a half-inch to 1.5 inches. From one to four inches or rain could fall in the foothills.
