Winter arriving with stormy weather in Northern California

The National Weather Service is predicting several waves of rain or snow for Northern California through Christmas Day.

The arrival of the first storm is forecast for Friday when rain is likely in Sacramento, starting around 5 p.m. The rain could very well continue into Saturday.

Another good shot of rain could fall Monday, the first day of winter, when precipitation is likely during the night. Snowfall amounts ranging from 4 inches to a foot could be recorded in the Sierra through early Tuesday.

The weather could be dicey for holiday travelers heading to cabins, hotels and ski resorts, according to the NWS. On the plus side, forecasters don’t believe that rainfall rates will be high enough to cause mud and debris slides in areas scarred by forest fires earlier in the year.

The detailed, seven-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:

Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 55. Calm wind becoming south-southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. South-southeast wind 3 to 5 mph.

Friday: Rain likely, mainly after 5 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 55. South-southeast wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Friday night: Rain likely. The rain could be heavy at times. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. South-southeast wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New precipitation amounts between one-quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Southeast wind around 7 mph becoming north-northwest in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Saturday night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38.

Sunday: A 30 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 55.

Sunday night: A chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 43.

Monday: A chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 56.

Monday night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 48.

Tuesday: A chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 59.

Tuesday night: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46.

Wednesday: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59.
