Rain will be the constant in the Sacramento region from through next week as a series if weather systems roll into the area.
Those traveling the Interstate 80 corridor should expect to see heavy rain through Saturday morning. Sierra motorists will probably see tire chain controls and travel delays, according to the National Weather Service.
Friday night’s rainstorm canceled the outdoor hockey game between the Stockton Heat and Bakersfield Condors. The game was rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Heat officials.
Nearly three-quarters of an inch of rain is expected in the Sacramento Valley.
Another storm is expected Sunday, but that system will likely be weaker, according to weather service forecasters.
Next week’s forecasts are a blanket “a chance of rain” for each day leading up to Christmas in Sacramento.
“We’re definitely in a rain pattern, and the rains will continue,” said Karl Swanberg, a weather service forecaster.
The detailed forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region through Christmas:
Saturday: A slow-moving system will bring showers before 10 a.m., then showers and thunderstorms likely between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Rain totals will be a half an inch in the Sacramento region. Showers also expected with thunderstorms after 4 p.m. High near 53. Snow fall amounts expected to be around nine inches at Sierra mountain passes and a little more at higher elevations. A winter storm warning above 5,000 feet remains in effect for the Western Sierra. South southeast winds will be around 7 mph becoming west southwest in the afternoon.
Saturday night: Another weather system enters bringing 20 percent chance of showers for Sacramento and snow in the Sierra before 10 p.m. After midnight, chance of showers will increase. Lows will be 39. Calm wind.
Sunday: A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 52. South southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Sunday night: A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 39. South southeast wind 8 to 15 mph.
Monday: A 50 percent chance of rain with chances for showers increasing to 70 percent by the afternoon and evening. Cloudy, with a high near 56.
