Showers expected in Sacramento region through Christmas

Wet weather dumped more good news on Sierra ski resorts and promised to keep Sacramento damp through Christmas.

Areas in the lower Sierras saw four to six inches of snow and six to eight inches fell on higher passes, according to the National Weather Service. The storm system is likely to drop another six to eight inches.

Rainfall was heavier in eastern Sacramento, with half an inch to an inch falling overnight. The same pattern of rain in the valley and snow in the mountains is likely to continue through Christmas.

The detailed, 7-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:

Today: Rain likely after 10am. High near 53. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: A slight chance of showers before 10pm, then a slight chance of rain after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39. South southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Sunday: Rain likely, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 49. South southeast wind 5 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: Rain likely, mainly before 10pm. Cloudy, with a low around 44. South southeast wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday: A 40 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 55. South southeast wind around 8 mph.

Monday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 48. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 57.
