The sun has come out to play in Sacramento on Super Bowl weekend.

After morning bouts of patchy fog, skies will be clear Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures nudging up to 70 degrees, the National Weather Service is forecasting.

“The next few days will probably be pretty close to record high temperatures,” weather service meteorologist Tom Dang said on Saturday morning. “It’s going to be great for barbecues.”

The warm and sunny weather is expected to extend through much of the week. A weak weather system is poised to approach Northern California sometime late next week or next weekend, but forecasters say it’s too early to say whether that means more rain.

The sunshine comes as a welcome respite. After four years of drought, Northern California has gotten a decent drenching, thanks to a long-term El Nino weather pattern. This week’s balmy weather doesn’t mean the El Nino is over, Dang said.

“Even during our wet years, we always have dry stretches,” he said. “The El Nino pattern is still out there.”

Expect highs in Sacramento to top 65 degrees Saturday and to warm to 69 Sunday, about time for the Super Bowl kick-off.

Down in Santa Clara, site of Super Bowl 50, skies will be sunny and the temperature should top 70 degrees at game time Sunday.
