Weak local rainfall this spring and summer in Southern California show why California's drought is far from over.

While Tuesday is expected warm for early April, Wednesday will be a scorcher when it comes to springtime temperatures.

The Sacramento region begins a week of up-and-down temperatures in which daily maximums are predicted to vary by 20 degrees.

High temperatures in the first week in April are normally around 70 degrees in Sacramento. The National Weather Service predicts today’s high will be a dozen degrees above that with plenty of wind.

The warm-up does not stop there. On Wednesday, the high is forecast to come close to a record.

The record high for Sacramento on April 6 is 91 degrees, a mark set in 1989. The predicted high for Wednesday is 89 degrees.

Weather service meteorologists are forecasting a rapid decline in temperatures beginning Friday. The afternoon highs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are expected to be only 69 degrees each day.

Brian Ferguson, deputy director of the California Department of General Services, outlines water-saving changes for Sacramento's Capitol Park.
