The official start of summer is fast approaching, but the weather on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday may not reflect that.

The National Weather Service said there is a 30 percent chance of rain in Sacramento on Thursday and issued a winter storm watch for western Plumas County and the Lassen Park region from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon.

NWS said up to 2 inches of snow is possible above 6,000 feet and between 3 and 5 inches could fall above 7,000 feet in the Lassen Park region.

NWS expects most of the precipitation to occur later Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. There is also a chance of afternoon thunderstorms with hail and lighting in the northern Sacramento Valley on Thursday afternoon, NWS said.

NWS advised travelers to prepare for the atypical conditions and to dress accordingly.
