As parents and conscientious food shoppers, my husband and I were very disturbed to hear about Rep. Steve King’s, R-Iowa, attack on food safety, HR 3599. The bill would take away the rights of states to set food safety standards. If another state allows unsound food production practices, our state’s businesses will be forced by the federal government to sell that product. Californians have established laws that ban the use of trans-fats in restaurants. We also require labeling of products containing potentially dangerous chemicals and set fat and nutrient standards for our dairy products. If the King bill passes, these laws would be thrown out. The bill aims to keep California consumers in the dark about the details of where our food came from in order to advantage Iowa agribusiness. The King bill is terrible for humans and all animals.
