While one teacher said he used the cartoon to reinforce lessons about the drought and water conservation for first-, second- and third-graders, others participating in the contest went for tried-and-true themes of Southern California water grabs, proposed twin tunnels in the Delta that may suck Northern California dry and the exposed lake bed behind Folsom Dam providing grounds for their morning coffee.
But the winner, Ken Lastufka of Sacramento, offered a very clever caption referring to tunnel muck, the term given for what will be dredged out of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in construction of a pair of water tunnels 35 miles long.
Lastufka pulled in nearly 50 percent of the votes of more than 250 cast. He will receive a signed color print of Steve Greenberg’s editorial cartoon with the winning caption.
