The 1,000 highest-paid local government workers in the Sacramento region collectively earned $172 million during 2010 -- enough to pay every municipal worker in Roseville, Folsom and Davis. The median pay for these workers was $162,500. Median pay for all local government workers is far less -- about $64,000, according to a Bee review of data from the state controller's office. The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District employed 207 of the 1,000 highest-paid employees in the region during 2010; the district has about 600 total workers. Sacramento County was a close second, though it had twenty times the total number of employees as Sac Metro. Roseville had almost as many employees in the top 1,000 as the city of Sacramento, even though Sacramento had three times as many total employees.

Several of the highest-paid workers on this list retired during 2010 and cashed out large amounts of sick or vacation time. The controller's office does not release the names of employees, only their pay.
Pension formulas show the percentage of salary a retiree will receive per year of service after reaching the listed age. For instance, "3%@50" means that a worker with 25 years of service can retire at age 50 with an annual pension equal to 75 percent -- 3 X 25 -- of his pay.
