Republic FC will host English Premier League club Sunderland AFC in a friendly at 8 p.m. July 14 at Bonney Field. The match will come four days before Republic FC plays the EPL’s Newcastle United FC, a Sunderland rival, also at Bonney Field.
Sunderland also will play Liga MX’s Pachuca at 8 p.m. July 17 at Bonney Field.
Sunderland, founded in 1879, appeared headed for relegation in the EPL this past season after the team won just four of 29 matches before the firing of Gus Poyet as manager. Former Netherlands men’s national team coach Dick Advocaat was hired as manager on a short-term deal and guided Sunderland to a 16th-place finish and relegation safety in the final nine matches. The team went 3-3-3 under his command.
The 67-year-old Advocaat had promised his wife he would retire after the season, but Thursday he announced he had changed his mind and signed a one-year deal to stay with the club.
