Regional Digest: Stanford, Arizona win cross country titles

The Stanford men and Arizona women won titles on Friday in the NCAA Cross Country West Regional at Haggin Oaks.

UC Davis finished 13th and Sacramento State 18th in the men’s 10-kilometer race, the schools reported. Oregon’s Edward Cheserek led all individuals with a time of 29 minutes, 35 seconds. The Hornets’ Reesey Byers placed 24th in 30:22 and the Aggies’ Brandon Pugh was 34th in 30:37.

UCD placed seventh and Sac State 16th in the women’s 6-kilometer event. Emma Bates of Boise State took individual honors in 19:11. Alycia Cridebring of the Aggies finished 19th in 20:08, and Rachel Mitchell of the Hornets was 28th in 20.19.

• Host and top seed UC Irvine earned a 2-0 victory over UC Davis (9-9-3, 4-4-2 Big West) in the semifinals of the conference men’s soccer tournament.

• Sacramento super middleweight Brandon Gonzales (17-0-1, 10 knockouts) will face Jonathan Nelson (18-0, 8 KOs) of Little Rock, Ark., in the semi-main event of an HBO-televised card at 7 p.m. today at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.

• Idaho State scored a 25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15 win over Sac State (13-15, 8-9 Big Sky Conference) win women’s volleyball at Colberg Court. The Hornets fell into a tie for sixth place with Northern Colorado. The top six teams in the 11-member Big Sky qualify for the league’s postseason tournament in Portland, Ore., on Nov. 29-30. Northern Colorado owns the tiebreaker.
