Offense: It still looks ugly at times, but the 49ers' deep passing game was back after a two-game absence. Colin Kaepernick had nice chemistry with Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis. Add another steady target, and he's golden.
Defense: The unit gave up an end-of-half field goal but clamped down on Robert Griffin and the Redskins in the second half. Aldon Smith had a strong game and looks to be back in form for the team's stretch run.

Special teams: LaMichael James has been a more aggressive alternative than his predecessor on punt returns, Kyle Williams, and averaged 14.4 yards a return on Monday. The coverage units were solid after a lapse last week in New Orleans.
Overall: The 49ers needed a win to stay ahead of the Cardinals in the hunt for a playoff spot and they got it. They now return home for two straight games against division opponents, as well as a chance to get on a roll before the postseason.
