Local college hoops: Big second half carries Irvine past Sac State

UC Irvine outscored Sacramento State 48-21 in the second half and cruised to a 79-53 victory at The Nest on Saturday night.

The Hornets held a 32-31 lead at halftime, but the Anteaters went on a 23-7 run to start the second half to take a 54-39 advantage.

Chris McNealy had 15 points to lead the Anteaters (5-3). Cody Demps led the Hornets (2-3) with 16 points. Mikh McKinney added 10 points and Dylan Garrity had nine.

Idaho 80, UC Davis 76 – Connor Hill had 29 points and Glen Dean scored all of his 18 points in the second half to lead the Vandals (4-4) in Davis.

The Vandals went on a 16-2 run to take a 78-71 lead with 2:49 to go.

The Aggies (3-5) cut the deficit to two on two jumpers by Corey Hawkins, but Hawkins couldn’t connect on a potential game-tying jumper with eight seconds left.

Hawkins led the Aggies with 18 points and Josh Ritchart added 16.


UCD 71, Akron 58 in San Luis Obispo – Sydnee Fipps scored 22 points to lead the Aggies (2-4) past the Zips (3-4) in the Holiday Beach Classic at Cal Poly, according to UCD’s website.

Fipps was named to the all-tournament team.
