49ers report card

REPORT CARD

Offense: The 49ers don’t get many “chunk” plays, but they get a huge one – Frank Gore’s 51-yard run – when they need it most. Colin Kaepernick is solid but again gets little help beyond Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis. Grade: B

Defense: The unit gives up two long touchdown drives in the second quarter but holds the Seahawks to a field goal in the second half. Cornerback Eric Wright makes sure Russell Wilson doesn’t get his fifth come-from-behind win by making a game-sealing interception. Grade: B+

Special teams: Kassim Osgood blocks a punt, LaMichael James resumes his role as an aggressive returner and Phil Dawson sets a 49ers record with his 19th consecutive field goal. A big Seattle punt return in the fourth quarter sets up a field goal that briefly gives the Seahawks the lead. Grade: B

Overall: The 49ers hold onto their spot in the playoffs and perhaps more importantly prove they can beat a playoff-caliber team. The road to the Super Bowl likely will go through Seattle; knowing they can beat the Seahawks can only help. Grade: A
