Regional digest: Hornets lose in Big Sky volleyball

Sacramento State squandered three match points in the fourth set Thursday night on the way to a 23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 32-30, 15-13 women’s volleyball loss to host Southern Utah in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams, Sac State reported.

The loss spoiled a career night for Hornets (5-11) outside hitter Sloan Lovett, who had 27 kills. The Thunderbirds are 8-4.

UC Davis beats Bryant in field hockey

Lauren Copeland scored in overtime to lift UC Davis over host Bryant 2-1 in a nonconference field hockey game, UCD reported.

Sophia Lisaius also scored for the Aggies (3-5). Bryant is 2-6.

Boxing card set for Saturday

A professional and amateur boxing card, primarily featuring regional fighters, is scheduled for the Metro City Soccer indoor complex in Rancho Cordova on Saturday.

The show opens at 4 p.m. with six amateur bouts. The pro matches begin at 6 p.m.

Featherweight John Abella (5-0-1) of Sacramento will face Jesus Sandoval (3-3-3) of Redwood City in the six-round main event. Featured in four-rounders are light heavy-weights Ryan Bourland (4-0) of Vacaville and Eric Smith (pro debut) of Sacramento, and junior lightweight Alberto Torres (4-0-2).

Tickets are $40 for general admission.
