Sports Night: Cain strong, but so are Cardinals in Giants’ loss

Giants: No relief in loss to Cardinals

The Giants lose 4-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Yadier Molina’s 100th career home run off of Hunter Strickland in the bottom of the eighth inning. Matt Cain ends a run of four poor starts, allowing two runs in six innings, and contributes a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. The Cardinals take two of three games from the National League West-contending Giants.

A’s: Chavez shows stamina in win over Dodgers

The A’s defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 on the strength of an ironman start from Jesse Chavez, who has been the subject of speculation that he is prone to fatigue as the season progresses.

River Cats: 10th win in a row ties franchise record

Andy Furillo: Raiders’ preseason win over Rams a score for morale

New coaches, players and enthusiasm have created hope of vast improvement for the Raiders. Last Friday’s 18-3 preseason victory over the St. Louis Rams also helped, though first-year coach Jack Del Rio concedes there is a “long climb ahead.”

49ers: Plenty of candidates for No. 3 receiver

The 49ers will be without Jerome Simpson, perhaps the front-runner to be their No. 3 wide receiver, for the first six weeks of the season while he serves a suspension. Yet there are other options in Quinton Patton, Bruce Ellington and undrafted rookie DeAndrew White.
