Kings: Anderson is an ‘insurance blanket’

Quietly, James Anderson has caught the attention of his Kings coaches and teammates. He started in Thursday’s 95-92 preseason victory over San Antonio though his numbers weren’t stunning: four points, two rebounds and an assist. And that’s fine, says coach George Karl. “His numbers don’t tell you how well we think he’s playing,” Karl says. “He just kind of gives you a no-nonsense, low-maintenance type of personality on your first unit.”

49ers: Staley a maybe, Davis out for Sunday’s game

Republic FC: Team says it made big bid for Lopez

Republic FC director of football Graham Smith says the team tried its best to persuade star midfielder Rodrigo Lopez to return to the team. Lopez, the 2-year-old franchise’s first signing and one of the best players in the USL, announced on social media Thursday he has decided to move on after his contract expired at the end of the season. “I think we made him a very favorable offer that would have made him the highest paid player in the USL,” Smith says, though he wouldn’t reveal dollar figures.
