Sports Night: 49ers-Seahawks rivalry lukewarm

49ers: Rivalry with Seahawks seems to have cooled

The once glowing-hot rivalry that produced games anticipated like prize fights of old is now lukewarm at best. The combatants no longer are in their prime and there’s no title belt at stake. When they meet Thursday night at Levi’s Stadium, the 49ers and Seattle Seahawks won’t be dueling for NFC West dominance as in recent encounters.

NLCS: Mets are going to the World Series

A new generation of Amazin’s is heading to the World Series. One final, charmed swing by Daniel Murphy helps send the New York Mets to a playoff sweep of the Chicago Cubs. Murphy homers for a record sixth consecutive postseason game, and the Mets brush aside the Cubs 8-3, capping a National League Championship Series in which New York never trailed.

ALCS: Blue Jays rout Royals to stay alive

Facing elimination, Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada suffocates the Royals for 7 2/3 innings in Toronto’s 7-1 victory over Kansas City. One day removed from a 14-run splurge, the Royals’ offense only manages one run against Estrada, a homer by Salvador Perez in the eighth. The Royals go home leading 3-2 in the American League Championship Series.

Ranked 13th in the area by The Bee, Del Campo (6-1) is prolific on offense, tough on defense and collectively bonded by a deep sense of family. There are seven active or retired law enforcement officers on the coaching staff and an honorary coach of sorts who worked for decades in the United States Secret Service.

Kings: Team uses layoff to prep for regular season

The Kings’ final preseason game was Saturday, which gives the team 10 days off before facing the Los Angeles Clippers in the regular-season opener. The Kings were pleased with their preseason performance overall, but the team’s 5-1 record isn’t the most important thing; coach George Karl liked that passing improved and turnovers decreased over the six games.
