Sacramento State guard Mikh McKinney and Saint Mary’s forward Brad Waldow from Ponderosa High School are among 64 seniors who have been selected to play in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament Wednesday through Saturday in Portsmouth, Va.
Representatives from all 30 NBA teams and scouts from numerous international teams are expected to attend the eight-team, 12-game tournament that began in 1953.
Portsmouth Invitational alums include NBA greats Rick Barry, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Dave Cowens, John Stockton and Scottie Pippen. Eight players who participated last year have played in the NBA this season.
McKinney and Waldow will play for an eight-man team that also includes Iowa center Gabriel Olesani, Lafayette forward Dan Trist, Providence forward LaDontae Henton, Louisville guard Wayne Blackshear, Long Beach State guard Mike Caffey and William & Mary guard Marcus Thornton.
McKinney, the Big Sky Conference Player of the Year, is the first Sac State player invited to play in the event. Waldow is a two-time All West Coast Conference first team selection.
McKinney and Waldow helped the West beat the East 109-87 in Friday’s Reese’s College All-Star Game in Indianapolis. Waldow had 12 points and six rebounds and McKinney contributed seven points and five assists.
