Perhaps the only thing missing from the history-making campaigns of the Sacramento State and UC Davis men’s basketball programs last season was the rivalry game.
A scheduling conflict led to a one-year hiatus in the Causeway Cup, but that has been rectified this season with the teams meeting twice. Sac State hosts the Aggies at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at the Nest. On Dec. 2, UCD hosts the Hornets at the Pavilion.
Sac State is 3-0 for only the third time in the program’s history. The Hornets have impressive road wins against Arizona State and Seattle and routed Division II Holy Names of Oakland in their home opener Friday.
The Hornets are led by sophomore guard Marcus Graves (19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds), senior guard Cody Demps (13.0 points, 5.3 rebounds), junior center Eric Stuteville (8.0 points, 5.7 rebounds) and junior forward Nick Hornsby (6.0 points, 7.0 rebounds).
UC Davis (2-1) has beaten Portland and Fresno Pacific and lost to North Dakota State in overtime, all at home.
The Aggies are led by senior forward Josh Fox (17.3 points, 8.0 rebounds), junior guards Brynton Lemar (11.0 points, 6.0 rebounds) and Darius Graham (9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds) and junior center Neal Monson (8.7 points, 10.3 rebounds).
Sac State leads 65-47 in a series that dates to 1948-49. The Hornets won the last meeting 73-67 in 2013 at the Pavilion. However, UCD has beaten the Hornets in the past two games at Sac State.
UC Davis women 66, Air Force 40 at the Pavilion – Alyson Doherty had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Aggies (2-2) over the Falcons (0-5).
UCD took control by outscoring Air Force 24-11 in the third quarter.
