Christian Brothers senior Nick Hilton proved a couple things when his play made ESPN’s “SportsCenter” Top 10 on Wednesday: Boys high school volleyball has a place in highlight reels and kicking is not only allowed, but viable. Well, for Hilton at least.
During Tuesday’s match against Mira Loma, Falcons junior Cesar Borrego dove to keep the ball alive, sending it high toward the back line over Hilton’s head. The ball looked as if it might be unreachable, but Hilton chased it down and, with his back to the net, extended a kick above his head and connected solidly with the ball, sending it just past a diving Mira Loma player for a point.
Christian Brothers senior Marcus Cepeda, whose video of the “bicycle kick kill” was picked up by “SportsCenter” at No. 6, has seen Hilton execute the play in practice, but never in a game.
“Nick is an amazing athlete and I’ve been best friends with him since I was in preschool, so we have been on our fair share of sports teams together,” Cepeda said via email. “He is always capable of making a miracle play.”
