Player of the Week: Nick Bonniksen, El Dorado

El Dorado football coach Joe Volek has been around quarterbacks much of his life and played the position, so he can appreciate a good, fearless leader. And he has one in senior captain Nick Bonniksen, who started at quarterback as a sophomore in their first season together. Last season, led by Bonniksen, El Dorado had its first winning record since 1998 and reached the playoffs for the first time since 1987. Bonniksen, who passed for 348 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown in Friday’s 72-28 rout of Rio Americano, is The Bee’s Player of the Week, based on voting on sacbee.com. “Nick is incredibly competitive, leads by his confident personality and his high level of performance,” Volek said. “His character is outstanding.”
