Prep player of the Week: Keylen Newsome, Valley

Keylen Newsome, Valley

Valley football coach Dave Filan can’t get enough of Keylen Newsome. He has him in an English class, challenging the senior to excel in the classroom. And then the coach urges Newsome to continue his progress and production in football. So far, message received.

Newsome has emerged, and his 187-yard, two-touchdown effort last Friday led the Vikings to a 28-23 victory over Galt for a 2-1 start. He is The Bee’s Player of the Week based on voting on sacbee.com.

A 5-foot-8, 212-pounder, Newsome has become a leader on campus, too, actively involved in a program run by alums called “Improve Your Tomorrow.”

“That’s helped guide Keylen toward an understanding of what he is capable of as a young man, player and leader,” Filan said. “He is genuinely humble and a joy to have. He wants to be one of the guys who helps bring back a sense of pride and accomplishment to the program.”
