High school football player of the Week: Josiah Deguara, Folsom

Josiah Deguara, Folsom

Folsom High School co-coaches Kris Richardson and Troy Taylor challenged Josiah Deguara to broaden his skills and be even better as a senior this fall. Deguara was a Bee All-Metro receiver in 2013 for a 14-1 team, but the coaches also wanted him to be a blocker on the edge to help the running game.

Deguara had nine receptions for 219 yards and four touchdowns in Friday’s 63-0 rout of then-No. 6 Granite Bay last Friday, but the Grizzlies also had to deal with the 6-foot-2, 205-pounder drive-locking them. Based on that performance, Deguara is The Bee’s Player of the Week in voting on sacbee.com.

“Josiah had two highlight-reel catches, and he dominated in the run game with some off-the-charts blocking,” Richardson said. “He’s risen to our challenge ... and it’s made him an even more complete player.”

Deguara, also a starter on Folsom’s Northern California championship basketball team last season, has 37 catches for 487 yards and eight touchdowns for the undefeated Bulldogs (5-0), who are ranked fourth nationally by MaxPreps.
