The Grizzlies’ starting halfback sprained his ankle against No. 1 Folsom on Sept. 26 and agonized as his team limped to a 63-0 loss. The senior hasn’t missed a snap since, and Granite Bay has won four consecutive games, including 47-0 over Woodcreek last Friday as Smith ran for three touchdowns in earning Bee Prep of the Week honors as voted by fans and followers on sacbee.com.
Granite Bay coach Ernie Cooper planned to rest Smith against Aptos on Oct. 3, but when halfback Ren Orlando went down with a shoulder injury, Smith raced onto the field. Smith also played some fullback in that game due to injury. Smith is the epitome of versatility and effort, Cooper, said.
“He’s a captain this year, respected by players, coaches and teachers,” Cooper said.
