Jayden Machado doesn’t light up the stat sheet, but he doesn’t have to, either.

The Elk Grove High School senior quarterback provides a steady balance to the Thundering Herd, whose offensive line goes by “Hammerheads.” Elk Grove can run with speed and power, and it can burn defenses with the pass.

Machado completed 8 of 14 passes for a modest 98 yards last Friday against previous No. 2 Grant, but three completions went for touchdowns to key a 24-17 victory that kept the team’s Delta League championship hopes alive.

This came a week after Elk Grove lost at Davis 16-14.

“We focused at practice, got to work, and it paid off,” Machado said.

Machado has passed for 737 yards and 13 touchdowns, hitting favorite target Gavin Reinwald 17 times for 329 yards and six touchdowns. Machado has touchdown strikes to seven different players. He helped lead Elk Grove to the Delta title last season and a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I finals.

No. 4 Elk Grove plays at No. 7 Jesuit on Saturday at 1 p.m.
