The rivalry always matters.

In winning 12 consecutive head-to-head athletic meetings against rival Sacramento State this academic year, UC Davis won the Causeway Cup for the fifth year in a row.

The Causeway Cup is an all-sports, head-to-head competition between the regional rivals, with the Aggies beating the Hornets in this year’s competitions by a combined score of 62 1/2-12 1/2.

That’s the largest margin of victory in the 13-year history of the competition, bettering the 37 1/2-point total by UC Davis during the 2013-14 academic year.

The schools compete in 17 common sports. UCD has won the Causeway Cup nine times to Sac State’s four.

Among the Aggies’ highest-profile Causeway Cup victories, a 48-30 football victory on Nov. 19 and the men’s basketball team won 81-72 at Golden 1 Center on Nov. 21.

UC Davis won the Big West Conference Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies defeated North Carolina Central 67-63 in a First Four play-in game before losing to top-seed Kansas 100-62 in the first round.

UC Davis coach Jim Les and players Darius Graham and Brynton Lemar talk about their 81-72 win over rival Sacramento State while the Hornets' Grant Dressler talks about his career high 15 points at the Golden 1 Center on Monday, Nov. 21, 2016.

The UC Davis women's basketball team poured in 110 points against rival Sacramento State en route to their Causeway Cup victory at The Nest on December 18, 2016. The triple digit points scored by the Aggie women also set a Division I program recor
