A closer look at the JC football state and NorCal rankings

American River College is ranked fourth in Northern California in the JC Athletic Bureau Top 20 and fifth in the state after a 3-0 start under first-year coach Jon Osterhout.

San Mateo is the state poll leader for the first time after routing defending state champion and national powerhouse Butte 51-6 in Oroville. San Mateo last lost in 2013, to Butte 28-20.

ARC, led by quarterback Tanner Trosin and an attacking defense, suddenly faces the meat of its non-conference schedule, hosting longtime national powerhouse City College of San Francisco, ranked second in NorCal and third in the state, on Saturday at 6 p.m. and taking on San Mateo on Oct. 4.

How good is San Francisco under coach George Rush, in his 37th season? The Rams have won nine national titles (five since 2000), 13 NorCal titles since 1997 and five state championships since 2000 and seven over all.
