Christian Huber, a senior receiver at Folsom High School, had six receptions for 150 yards and three touchdowns to help the Bulldogs to a 56-20 win at Burbank on Friday night in a nonleague game to earn The Bee’s Prep Football Player of the Week honors as voted by fans and followers on sacbee.com.
“Coach (Troy) Taylor told me that I earned the job and added, ‘don’t make me regret it,’ ” said Huber, who was so far down the depth chart as a junior he didn’t make a catch. “I just kept on working. I’m very proud of myself. We have a great program, very competitive. I had big shoes to fill (in place of graduated Cole Thompson, a Bee All-Metro receiver in 2014). I’m practicing as hard as I can, changing nothing, except improvement.”
Huber learned a humbling lesson in his first start, against Bay Area power Clayton Valley Charter of Concord. He dropped a sure touchdown pass that would have iced the game but redeemed himself moments later with a 65-yard kickoff return to set up the decisive score. Coaches told Huber to forget the drop and focus on the next play.
“I was motivated on that return, and all I thought of was my drop,” Huber said. “I let the crowd noise get to me (on the drop), thinking of getting into the end zone before I even had the ball. I learned.”
