Jayden Machado said he’s just trying to contribute, to help his team win, and the Elk Grove High School junior quarterback did his part as he dazzled in the Thundering Herd’s 63-14 rout of Jesuit on Friday in a Delta League game.

Machado completed 9 of 11 passes for 193 yards and four touchdowns, including three to Gavin Reinwald, to earn The Bee’s Prep Football Player of the Week in voting on sacbee.com.

Coupled with the running of Ryan Robards, who earned Player of the Week honors after scoring six touchdowns Oct. 2 at Grant, Machado gives the No. 2 Thundering Herd a balanced attack. Teams can ill afford to load the box to stop the run if Machado keeps teams honest.

“I’m just doing what I can to help us win,” Machado said. “I have a great team around me, like Robards and the ‘Hammerheads,’ the linemen. They make it all work.”

Said Elk Grove coach Chris Nixon: “Jayden’s been really good. He’s worked hard, and he makes plays.”

Machado has passed for 713 yards and nine touchdowns with two interceptions for Elk Grove (6-0, 3-0).
