Manager: Bruce Bochy (ninth season)
They’re here: 3B Casey McGehee, OF Nori Aoki, OF Justin Maxwell
They’re out of here: 3B Pablo Sandoval, OF Michael Morse
Projected lineup: CF Angel Pagan (.300, 3 HR, 56 R), 2B Joe Panik (.305, 1 HR, 18 RBIs), 1B Brandon Belt (.243, 12 HR, 27 RBIs), C Buster Posey (.311, 22 HR, 89 RBIs), RF Hunter Pence (.277, 20 RBI, 74 RBIs, 106 R; will start season on disabled list because of fractured forearm), 3B Casey McGehee (.287, 4 HR, 76 RBIs), LF Nori Aoki (.285, 1 HR, 43 RBIs), SS Brandon Crawford (.246, 10 HR, 69 RBIs), starting pitcher spot
Projected rotation: LH Madison Bumgarner (18-10, 2.98 ERA, 219 strikeouts), RH Jake Peavy (6-4, 2.17 in 12 starts with Giants), RH Matt Cain (2-7, 4.18), RH Tim Hudson (9-13, 3.57), Tim Lincecum (12-9, 4.74)
Key relievers: RH Santiago Casilla, (3-3, 1.70, 19 saves), LH Jeremy Affeldt (4-2, 2.28 in 62 games), RH Sergio Romo (6-4, 3.72, 23 saves), LH Javier Lopez (1-1, 3.11 in 65 games), RH Yusmeiro Petit (5-5, 3.69 in 39 games, 12 starts)
Outlook: The Giants, in keeping with recent years, will go as far as their pitching takes them. A lot will depend on what they get from Cain and Hudson, who are returning after elbow (Cain) and ankle (Hudson) surgery, and they hope Lincecum can still be an effective fifth starter in what could be his last season in a Giants uniform. Pence should miss no more than a month, and he’ll be needed in a lineup that’s built to manufacture runs, not hoard them. A lot will have to go right for the Giants to keep up with the Dodgers in the N.L. West.
