Republic FC won the USL championship in its first season, but the team scored arguably its biggest victory Wednesday.
Sacramento defeated Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake 4-1 at Papa Murphy’s Park in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
With the victory, Republic FC reaches the fifth round for the first time. It’s also Sacramento’s first win over an MLS team in Open Cup play. They were 0-2, with both losses coming against the San Jose Earthquakes.
Wednesday was the first time Republic FC hosted an MLS team, not including friendly matches.

Republic FC striker Trevin Caesar opened the scoring in the 29th minute.
After Real Salt Lake equalized in the 35th on a breakaway by Ricardo Velazco, Agustin Cazarez put Republic FC back in front eight minutes later.
Republic FC took a 3-1 lead into halftime behind Jeremy Hall’s penalty kick in stoppage time, but the goal would end up being insurance for Sacramento.
Danny Barrera, who assisted on Republic FC’s first two goals, added a 71st-minute header to cap the scoring at 4-1.
Sacramento will find out its next opponent Thursday, when the Round of 16 Draw takes place. It will be streamed live on U.S. Soccer’s Facebook page. The matches will take place on June 27 or 28. A coin flip will determine who plays at home.
