For Republic FC, it’s one Major League Soccer opponent down and more to go, as the team looks to extend its best run through the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

After beating Real Salt Lake 4-1 on Wednesday night in the club’s first victory over an MLS team, Republic FC will face LA Galaxy, the big-league brothers of their USL rivals, on June 28 at the StubHub Center in Carson. Kickoff for the Round of 16 game is set for 8 p.m.

It will be Republic FC’s first competitive match against LA Galaxy, who are eighth in the MLS Western Conference with a 5-5-3 league record.

The winner travels to face the victor between the San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders. Republic FC is 0-2 against the Earthquakes in U.S. Open Cup play.

Republic FC joins the USL’s FC Cincinnati and Miami FC from the North American Soccer League as the only Division II sides remaining. But neither of them is on Sacramento’s side of the draw, so it would need three more wins against MLS teams to reach the final.

▪ Republic FC will host reigning CONCACAF Champions League victors CF Pachuca in a friendly at 8 p.m. on July 15. It will mark the third Liga MX side to visit Sacramento for a friendly.
