While a few left at halftime, and a some appeared not to show up at all due to the heat, Sacramento Republic FC set a league attendance record on Sunday.
An announced sell-out of 8,000 broke the USL Pro single-season attendance record as the home team beat the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 5-0. Republic FC’s 118,107 season attendance smashed the previous record of 112,748, a mark set by Orlando City SC last season.
At kick off the temperature was near 100 degrees. The aluminum bleachers on the east side of the pitch were blanketed in scorching sun and the fans were bathed in perspiration for the first half.
The west side of the wide, green Bonney Field, installed this year at Cal Expo, was shaded from the first kick. The team said Sunday’s match was the ninth sellout of the regular season.
